Hi, I’m Kadeja Al-Kanass.
Staff Therapist | PLMHP | kadeja@jaimentalhealth.com | She/Hers
As a child of immigrants, I love working with couples and individuals who are ready to look honestly at their patterns, whether that’s a couple wanting to rebuild trust and intimacy, or an individual untangling anxiety, complex or childhood trauma, or navigating racial/cultural identity concerns, and the weight of navigating more than one cultural identity at once. I’m especially drawn to work with immigrant and refugee clients, children of immigrants processing the push and pull of two worlds, first-generation individuals, and people carrying the quiet exhaustion of holding everyone else together. I also enjoy supporting couples working through grief, intimacy, or a rocky season in their relationship.
My approach is relational and collaborative because I believe healing happens in connection. I draw on IFS, somatic approaches, EFT, EMDR, sand tray, Gottman Level 1 interventions, tailoring modalities so that it is centered around what the client actually needs. Clients can expect a space that is warm but direct. I will gently challenge you when it is useful, and I will always make room for your full story, including the parts shaped by culture, family, and history.
We may work well together if you want to explore past experiences and how they contribute to your current thoughts and behaviors, process trauma, navigate family or interpersonal dynamics, if you are interested in EMDR or somatic therapies, or carry shame/guilt/grief and/or attachment-based challenges. We may also work well together if you are looking to improve your sexual intimacy within your relationships, or would like to work on body image issues.
As a Muslim woman and eldest daughter of Iraqi immigrants, I became a therapist because I want to see marginalized communities not just survive but thrive by deconstructing stigmas and narrative around mental health. I hope to do this by being a trauma-informed therapist that is guided by cultural humility and curiosity. Working with diverse populations to process past wounds, recognize strengths, and breaking negative cycles to create meaningful change within individuals and relationships.
I view therapy as not just a way to “improve” or “get better” but as a way to rediscover and become one’s true authentic self. I look at one’s dynamic with family, where they grew up, how they saw the world or how the world sees them to understand the full story of those I work with. I welcome all emotions, thoughts, and experiences in and out of the office. You can expect me to be direct at times, and encourage you when you doubt yourself. I also offer a collaborative and holistic approach that is client-centered and trauma-informed in order to provide safety and a sense of healing that feels right for you.
When I am not in session, you can likely find me working out, watching TV, going for walks, painting using oils, cooking with loved ones, or spending time with family and friends.
